This liminal space tends to be the best place for ideas to sprout! The piece is inspired by the first dungeon entrance in the first Zelda game (the spooky scary tree). As I worked my way through the sketching phase, I realized it sort of looked like an evil Deku Tree. It never occurred to me before that moment that the Deku Tree (the first dungeon in Ocarina of Time) was probably also based on the design of that first dungeon entrance in Zelda 1. Not sure how I missed that. Anyway, this was a lot of fun to work on, coming up with visual details that added a bit of additional mystery and character to the scene.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is a special version of this artwork that I printed myself using a Risograph machine. A Risograph is a digital duplicator made by the Riso Kagaku Corporation of Japan starting in 1980, and it's printing process actually has more in common with screen printing than laser or inkjet printing. Each color is printed separately through a screen on it's own layer. The Riso is very environmentally friendly. The screens are made of banana fibers, the ink is made from rice oil, and the machines themselves use minimal energy. One of the unique aspects of the Riso is that, due to this type of physical process, each print will have it's own unique character, whether it be variations in color due to ink flow, registering (alignment) of layers, or visual texture. These are a big part of why artists have contributed to the resurgence of popularity of Riso printers.
