This is a special edition of artworks I originally created with graphite and gouache. I printed these versions using a Risograph machine.

A Risograph is a digital duplicator made by the Riso Kagaku Corporation of Japan starting in 1980, and it's printing process actually has more in common with screen printing than laser or inkjet printing. Each color is printed separately through a screen on it's own layer. The Riso is very environmentally friendly. The screens are made of banana fibers, the ink is made from rice oil, and the machines themselves use minimal energy. One of the unique aspects of the Riso is that, due to this type of physical process, each print will have it's own unique character, whether it be variations in color due to ink flow, registering (alignment) of layers, or visual texture. These are a big part of why artists have contributed to the resurgence of popularity of Riso printers. Expect these unique bits of character in your print!
