"Hole-punch," O'Hare, 2006

On an overcast Tuesday, Nov 7th, 2006, between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m., a metallic disc-shaped object estimated between 22 and 88 feet in diameter, was witnessed by United Airlines pilots, managers, and mechanics. It hovered silently over the United Airlines terminal gate C17 at O’Hare for between five and fifteen minutes before it suddenly shot upward at great speed leaving a clean circular hole in the cloud layer.

At first the Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines denied knowledge of the situation, but later were forced to recant when a recording between air traffic control and a United supervisor surfaced. They first attempted to explain the event as airport lights reflecting off of the bottom of the cloud layer, though it was day time and the airport lights weren’t on. They next attributed it to a weather phenomenon called a “hole-punch cloud” which forms during below freezing temperatures as ice crystals from a higher cloud layer fall down through a lower layer. However, this phenomenon does not coincide with the temperatures on that day, nor does it explain the multiple airport employees who saw a large metallic disc hovering over the airport for several minutes before shooting up through the clouds.
