“I Thought Maybe There Was Something Wrong with My Eyes,” Kenneth Arnold, Rainier, 1947

On a clear day in 1947, Kenneth Arnold, and experience civilian pilot, reported seeing bright reflective saucer-like objects with no jet streams traveling in a line passing through the Cascade mountains and in front of Mt. Rainier. He said they flew in a loose echelon formation spanning over five miles, and likened the movement of the formation to the tail of a kite, as they weaved, flipped, and flashed through the mountain range and banked at speeds impossible for humans to survive. From his calculations he gave an estimate of around 1,700 mph.

Other reports followed, such as that of L. G. Bernier who reported to the Portland Oregon Journal that he’d witnessed three of these objects about a half-hour prior to Arnold’s sighting, Ethel Wheelhouse of Yakima, Washington, who also reported high speed flying discs around the time of Arnold’s sighting, and a United Airlines crew traveling to Seattle who reported seeing between five and nine disc-shaped objects in loose formation, but could not close in on the objects.
